Short description
Ioana has an experience of more than 20 years in medical research focusing on functional genomics and experimental therapeutics. She has completed her PhD in FUNDP Namur, Belgium and was in the last years a Fulbright Visiting Professor at MD Anderson Cancer Center, UT, USA.

She established the first functional genomics platform in Romania between UMPh Iuliu Hatieganu and The Oncology Institute Ion Chiricuta. She is running two research centers focusing on personalized medicine especially in the field of cancer.

With more than 130 publications in the filed and 40 national and international projects her experience in research management is of great importance in developing new scientific areas as Bioinformatics.

Topic of speech
The era of Bioinformatics just arrived in the last years with a huge impact on our lives, diseases and future quality of life, independent aging and precision medicine. Biomedical sciences and medicine looks completely different our days. Exciting and efficient new approaches have become available for the analysis of entire genomes, transcriptome, proteomes and metabolomics and the analysis of large data sets.

A critical direction of future personalized medicine will be to determine the function of the many genes identified by the genome analysis, how these different genes are regulated, and how they work together to mediate complex biological processes at the molecular level. The acquisition of data made possible by genomics technologies has created a tremendous gap between available data, their interpretation and their clinical value. Bioinformatics was developed to understand biological systems and their role in new treatments for much pathology.

Bioinformatics comprises genomic analysis, database and data mining, algorithm development and high-performance computing.
